International Day for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

Today, 5 May, marks the International Day for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

Its history began in 1992, when persons with disabilities from 17 countries held the first European day of action for equal rights and against discrimination.

For Ukraine, this day carries a particularly important meaning. The war has increased the number of people facing injuries, reduced mobility, and the need for long-term support. It has also made accessible healthcare, safe evacuation, shelter, and adapted environments more urgent than ever.

This day reminds us that barriers faced by persons with disabilities still exist – in physical spaces, services, communication, and access to assistance. Removing these barriers requires daily work, practical decisions, and cooperation.

Within the framework of the new project, the TERA Consortium, led by Team4UA, has been joined by partners implementing health-related activities: Alliance for Public Health, ZDOROVI, and Fortitude.

Together, we stand for equality, dignity, and respect for persons with disabilities.

To mark this day, we prepared a short post that looks at disability inclusion more broadly – from accessibility and daily barriers to humanitarian work, support systems, and the role each of us can play in making our environment more open, inclusive, and human-centered.
